1.    Do a thorough keyword research online. Find the most profitable keywords for your small business.

2.    Target only the keywords that you have a chance at ranking for.

3.    If the keywords are already over run with large corporations on the first page, chances are you will need a HUGE SEO and PPC budget in order to compete.

4.    Focus on long tail keywords with less than 1000 searches per month.

5.    Use those money-making keywords in your blog posts, web pages and in your social media posts.

“Sure, I will do your online marketing for free. Don’t pay until I get you results man!”    LOL really? Free?

1.    Does the company offer a “No payment till I get results?” This is a big shocker when you read the fine print. You must have a budget of $7500, $10,000 or more per month that you give to them to run your campaigns for you. This is what it usually takes for big SEO and PPC campaigns anyway fyi. If its too good to be true, it probably is.

2.    Did the SEO company use PPC (pay per click ads) to rank #1 for ‘SEO’? Ask them why they are not ranked high in Google SEO search for their own keywords? 🤔

I have been doing SEO (search engine optimization) for over 18 years. Here recently, a number of branding or advertising agencies are now offering SEO and Social Media marketing packages.

These ad agencies are CLUELESS as to how to rank their own website for real keywords let alone able to help your business out. They charge handsomely for these fake services as well.

3.    Does the SEO company promise #1 rankings for $100 a month or less?   Think about it, if you or I could be #1 for a keyword like ‘Reno Real Estate’ for less than $100 a month, we could be rich! Why are those big corporations spending hundreds of thousands of dollars a month to be #1 for that keyword?

Most of the large SEO or PPC companies are hoping you will keep paying the money and not notice OR they trick you into thinking your #1 by having you sign into your Gmail email and check your rankings. They are also buying fake views to look at your website and inflate your stats.

4.    Save yourself the money and migraine headaches and do NOT do your own PPC in Google or FaceBook! Why you ask? These large advertising sites will take your money, fast. You must have skin in the game and be an active PPC marketing expert to make these sites work well for your business. 99% of every business that does their own PPC lose money, every time!

5.    Take classes on PPC and advertising before starting a supposed easy to use PPC campaign with Google or Facebook.

6.    Do not count on posting on your Facebook wall as advertising. Even if you have thousands of followers, less than 2% of your followers will ever see your posts! FB is total pay to play now.

7.    Never sign a yearly contract with a large marketing company like Yelp or others.  If some large company is promising you the moon for a few hundred dollars each month, save your money and go gamble in Reno.

1.    Business cards are still a great way to reach new clients. Make sure your business card is unique and offers something that is surprising and/or funny.

2.    Create flyers about your products and services and share around town. Do this weekly for best reach.

3.    Cold calling can work in some areas. Today most small businesses are over whelmed with sales calls. So, instead, call with some good news. Offer something useful and for free.

4.    Volunteer at local and busy events while wearing your company t shirt!

5.    Take people to lunch once a month.

6.    Invite past clients out to an art workshop, paid by you of course. Ask them to invite a friend. Actually, have fun and get to know each other.

7.    Print up your logo and a fun business quote on coffee mugs. Then send them to new potential clients. They will use this mug in their break room and will see your message every day at breaktime. 😊

8.    Go in on a local billboard with a related business in town. Yes these big annoying ads still work in some locations.

I regularly keep an eye on my local and national SEO or Internet Marketing competitors. I want to see what services they sell or changes to their offerings.

Lately, I am noticing a number of larger marketing sites popping up claiming that for a small monthly fee, they will seemingly rank your website at the top of Google and  Yahoo search.

This intrigued me, because I know that no one marketing plan will fit every business, even if those businesses are in the same industry or niche.

Have these big guys figured out some ground breaking SEO strategy that magically works for everyone?

Businesses who are looking to rank their websites locally at the top of the Google search results need to focus on 3 things when researching affordable and reputable marketing packages or services.

  1. Does the marketing company guarantee results? Results that matter like your website being positioned at the top of Google search for a keyword that actually has a fare amount of search volume each month? A lot of larger SEO companies will promise to get your website into all the major search engines, what the fail to mention is that you will only rank for your company name and nothing more.
  2. Is the company actually selling you Search Engine Optimization and on going SEO services or are they buying a few PPC pay per click ads each month and charging you a great deal of money to do so? SEO is all about ranking your website naturally in the “free clicks” section of Google. PPC is very helpful, but can be a huge waste of money if not done with a specific goal in mind.
  3. Ask to see reviews from a real small business that you can call and chat with. There are lots of SEO company websites that look like they are located in the US, but are actually a front for businesses in other countries. You always want to work with someone local if you can find a qualified SEO expert. You want someone that has credibility and is around when you need them. Working with a company in another country is just asking for trouble.

Each website has its own score card with Google. There are over 200 ranking factors that Google assesses to determine if your website will outrank the competitor down the road.

Some of the SEO terms to know about are:

Time on site – how long do your website visitors stay on your website with each visit? The longer the better for your SEO.

Bounce rate – How many people that click onto your website from a Google search immediately hit the big bad BACK button the second they land on your website? The lower this number, the better.

CTR or Click Thru Rate – The higher this percentage, the better. Your CTR is calculated by how many impressions or times your website address came up in a Google search, then was clicked on.

Google has reported that they update their search engine algorithm at least 600 times a year. I think they do it to play with our heads, but that is another story. Us SEO experts have to stay up to date with these changes in order to protect our client’s rankings as well as our own.

With so many changes, I find it very hard to believe that any one SEO company can offer a one size fits all marketing package that will work for everyone.

My guess is that they blindly offer these marketing packages to hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting businesses around the world, hoping to get lucky with those businesses who have no clue that they are paying for a SEO service that is not even working for them.

If enough people went to Google and searched for ‘Things to do in Reno’ and clicked on the same website, but immediately clicked on the back button, this would tell Google’s Rank Brain AI, that this website or page on this website is not a good fit for that keyword phrase and over time, this website or page on this website would start to drop down to the 2nd, 3rd and eventually to the back pages.

Is there a way to outsmart my competitors SEO rankings?

Yes, yes there is. In the world of Internet Marketing there are the good gals and the bad guys. One SEO expert will promise you the highest rankings in Google for almost nothing. Or worse, sign you up for a long SEO contract and hope you never notice the fake traffic that they paid to go to your website to inflate your Google Analytics stats. These guys focus on the quick fix solutions, the dazzling sneaky SEO tactics that may work in the short run, but will most certainly cause a great deal of harm to the clients website rankings.

Then you have the good gals, the ladies who dedicate their time, energy and expertise to work closely with her clients, making sure that all the t’s are crossed and all the I’s dotted to the exact liking of the Google search engine. These hard worker bees deeply care about their clients success, and take it personally when their clients outrank the bad guys.

How does the average small business know who is who in the online SEO world?

It’s easy, you check out their Google, Facebook and Linkedin Reviews. If their reviews are from real businesses like you, then your golden. If the reviews are oddly enough from other SEO agency’s or Marketing Firms, something is off. Why is that? Think about it, why would your competitors, especially in the SEO industry, give their competitors 5 star reviews? It is a Ponzi scheme to fool the review site. See, the more 5 star reviews you have on your profile or listing, the higher your website will rank in LinkedIn and other review sites. These SEO experts all hop on this bandwagon of fake reviews because they are not direct competitors, so they all agree to give each other fake reviews to beat the system.

Also keep in mind the adage, “If its too good to be true, it probably is.”

I have had new clients send me their login information to some humongous SEO corporations dashboard only to learn that the SEO corporation did nothing, absolutely nothing for this small business SEO, but charged their credit card $99 a month for a whole year!

SEO should be a customized solution for each website. A one size fits all mentality is a big warning sign to run the other direction. There are hundreds of factors that determine whether a website will be ranked #1 or on the last page of Google search results. Even websites in the same industry. No two are alike, ever.

Is all of this necessary? Seems like a lot of work?

The short answer is of course, don’t be silly. The full answer is, it depends. Some industries are just too saturated for a small company to stand a fighting chance. Some keywords and keyword phrases will take at least 2 years to rank organically in their market or city. While, others can rank within 2 weeks in the #1 spot. An experienced and knowledgeable SEO expert will be able to give you an honest answer before signing you up for their services. Although they cannot look into a Google Crystal Ball and give you exact dates, they can give you a good estimate of the time it will take them to get the job done.

What if your small business wants to knock the local leader off their throne in Google? What if that competitor is doing all the right things with SEO?

This is where we get to the good part. The part that gets my blood pumping and lots of creative ideas flowing. A good, solid challenge!

The first step to take is to do a full SEO audit of your competitor’s website as well as your website. Why?

A full technical SEO audit includes analyzing the structure of the website, as well as a list of the top development errors and broken links.

Any errors that we can find with an audit, will be one more item that we can do better with your website.

Next step is to devise a custom SEO Marketing Plan for the next 3, 6 and 8 months. Assess what content is working for the competitor, then use this data to create more engaging and useful content. Maybe we create a customized calculator, or we create a video series… the goal is to assess your competitors CTR (click thru rate) and their bounce rate, then improve on those numbers.

SEO in a very competitive market requires more than building backlinks and creating articles. This is why it is super important to know what your up against, if you can actually accomplish your goals or maybe need to utilize other online marketing tactics to reach your goal like PPC (pay per click), Guest Blog Posts and other outreach techniques.

One is to show you that yes, you can and need to have a solid SEO plan of attack in place for your business and Two, that you can do this work yourself, heck, I can even create the SEO plan, come into your office and train you and your staff how to implement the work. I even can check in twice a month to make corrections if needed.

If you are way too busy to do any of those items, I can totally take charge and make things happen for you as well.

 

SEO looks like it is too competitive, what else can I do to position my business in Google?

You might be surprised at what hidden gems, or keywords that I can dig up for your company. Say your target keywords are super competitive and you have a smaller budget and resources of time. I can look for related keywords and long tail keywords that are easier to rank for and if targeting enough of these long tail keywords, can send just as much traffic if not more traffic than the big, competitive keywords your top competitors are dominating in.

I have clients all the time use this strategy. I even use this myself, even though I dominate all of the top SEO related keywords in my industry and city, I still target the long tail keywords as well.
